In this episode of “Fit With Fallon” I headed over to Crunch Gym in Burbank, CA. to try a new yoga class that’s getting all your favorite celebrities high. Anti-gravity yoga is a combination of dance, yoga, pilates, and calisthenics all done while suspended in an air, hanging hammock. It’s a great workout that gets you in shape and helps with realigning your back from the compression of gravity. Watch as I channel my inner acrobat during a personal session at Crunch gym!
I met with Sahara, Crunch’s anti-gravity yoga instructor, so she could explain to me the benefits of this class as well as show me some of the moves.
Just to brief you, I have taken various yoga classes before such as regular yoga and bikram yoga but boy was I in for a surprise with this class. As a former competitive gymnast I was definitely up for the challenge and excited to try something new. There were moments during the class where I felt scared, relaxed, and even thought I could fly! Check out the interview I did with Sahara below, followed by step by step breakdown of the moves she taught me.
FWF: Can you tell us more about this anti-gravity yoga class?
Sahara: Well antigravity is a distinct program that decompresses the spine, that help revitalizes the nervous system, and helps your body move more freely and easier, as opposed to traditional yoga on the floor.
FWF: Some people tend to shy away from yoga because they feel like they’re not going to get a good workout, they’re not going to get their heart rate up, they’re not going to break a sweat.
Sahara: There are various levels of fitness involved in this fitness program. There’s a cardio aspect, a fitness aspect, and a traditional workout aspect.
FWF: Any tips for beginners?
Sahara: There are no beginners, there are no advanced students, the poses are what they are and it’s a matter of trusting yourself and allowing yourself to let go of any judgement and have fun!
Cardio: She started me out with a quick cardio routine on the hammock to get my heart rate up. I was instructed to lock my hands into the ropes and quickly do jump squats lifting up my own body weight. After 10 reps, I started to break a sweat.
Fitness: I asked Sahara if she could show me some of the cool acrobatic type of moves that I have seen circling the web. These moves are called “dual moves” because the first part of the move will help decompress the spine and the second part included more fun, Circus Soleil type moves which stimulates the brain and revitalizes your entire nervous system that releases hormones that make you happy and sexy 😉
1.Plump: lean back knees to chest 2. Lever: extend legs forward (this def worked my core) 3. Straddle lever: open legs wide 4. Wide circle leg wrap: hook your feet 5. Release and hang for the decompression of your spine 6. Back up to slide your legs all the way through and pull yourself up. Look at your belly button as you release and flip over and wrap your feet around once again (I thought I was I was going to fall flat on my face during this part lol). 7. Release again and you are back to your upside down hanging pose.
Cool down: The end of the class she had one more surprise move in store for me. It’s a move that allows your nervous system to calm down so you can receive the healing benefits called a Cocoon because it looks like a cocoon similar to what a caterpillar rests in before it turns into a butterfly. It was so relaxing I almost fell asleep. It was the perfect way to end the class, as I was tired from trying to hold myself up throughout the different moves Sahara had me do.
